About Wm. Randell "Randy" Johnson

Wm. Randell “Randy” Johnson has thirty-three years of combined experience prosecuting and defending civil, criminal, personal injury and workers’ compensation cases in administrative, trial court and appellate proceedings and has handled over 100 criminal and civil appeals.

Randy and his wife, Kelly, have been married for over 36 years and are the proud parents of Ashley and Travis. Ashley is a forensic toxicologist in Houston and is working on her Texas MBA in the McCombs School of Business MBA program. Travis recently produced a short film, is working on another film project and is pursuing a career in the Radio, Television and Film industry.

A life-long Methodist, Randy, and his wife Kelly, are members of St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Plano, Texas.  

While in law school, Randy served as president of the Board of Barristers, participated on two national moot court teams, and was awarded the Order of Barristers. Having developed a keen interest in appellate advocacy and procedure, Randy started his legal career as an assistant district attorney in the Appellate Division of the Dallas County District Attorney's Office.

Randy has been licensed since 1984 and has prosecuted and defended criminal cases in the trial and appellate courts. He has also represented both plaintiffs and defendants in civil cases at the trial and appellate levels and is certified by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization in the areas of Civil Trial Law, Personal Injury Trial Law and Texas Workers' Compensation Law. Randy is also a frequent speaker and presenter at continuing education seminars and has shared the breadth and depth of experience as a mentor to other attorneys, including three which have gone on to serve as administrative law judges.

In addition to handling over 100 civil and criminal appeals, Randy has tried numerous civil and criminal jury trials to verdict, including civil trials in Collin, Cooke, Dallas, Denton, Erath, Ellis, Grayson, Harris, Hunt, Johnson, Navarro, Parker, Tarrant and Yoakum Counties.

Randy obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Texas at Austin in 1980 and graduated from Texas Tech University School of Law in 1984. Randy began his legal career as a prosecutor with the Dallas County District Attorney’s office in 1984. Initially assigned to the appellate section, Randy handled numerous criminal appeals, including a number of death penalty cases. In 1987, Randy was recruited by an insurance defense firm to defend workers’ compensation cases and later handled personal injury, product liability and insurance bad faith cases, as well as workers’ compensation cases. Randy stopped representing insurance companies around 2001 and has focused on representing private individuals since that time.

Randy is not certified in the area of criminal law but has been defending criminal cases since before 2002 and is a member of the Collin County and Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Associations. He is also a member of the Texas Workers’ Advocates and the Workers’ Compensation Section of the State Bar of Texas.

Randy is AV rated by Martindale Hubbell which is their highest rating for professional ethics and legal ability.

Randy looks forward to the honor and opportunity of being an appellate court justice and to drawing on his many years of experience in prosecuting and defending civil and criminal cases in the trial and appellate courts and to serving the citizens of the Fifth District as the Place 12 Justice for many years to come.
